Bootleg Baby

Bootleg Baby

This weekend Miss Holt is giving a soirée at her home, and consequently I have been rushing round like a mad thing all day doing things for it! However, I hardly mind, because – and be aware I got the dope straight from Mr Gabor […]

A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life

Some of you have been asking just what are the day to day duties of a secretary to a Hollywood executive – so I thought I would do a “day in the life” post. Of course, you must remember that in Hollywood, no day is […]

How to Sell a Movie Story

How to Sell a Movie Story

It seems that just everybody wants to be in pictures these days. I can hardly judge – it’s the reason I came out to California myself, after all. But since working at the “front end” of Players Incorporated, I am most certainly finding that many […]

Charleston Party

Charleston Party

Do you ever have those moments where you’d like to just disappear like Mr Harry Houdini himself? Well I experienced one such moment today and I still blush to think of it. How it happened was this: One of our directors, Mr Emil Lazlo, has […]

There’s Nothing Like New Clothes…

There’s Nothing Like New Clothes…

I have been really quite decadent and have ordered myself no less than three new outfits for work. Yesterday Mr Caspar Gabor – he’s our studio manager and in charge of the day-to-day running of the studio including finances – informed me that I am to be given […]

7 Things to Do in Los Angeles

7 Things to Do in Los Angeles

1. Visit the Santa Monica Pleasure pier. Later this year a “Merry Go Round” ride is due to open, which I anticipate will be quite thrilling – but for now, just to walk amongst the cafeterias and hot dog and ice cream stands can pass […]

The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse

The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse

Esme Holt, my boss, was due to attend the the premiere showing of the new June Mathis picture The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse last night, but she had a headache and couldn’t attend – and so she offered her invitation to me. As you […]

Goals and Hopes and Plans

Goals and Hopes and Plans

I would like to be able to cook one meal properly – say, steak and french fried potatoes. I don’t hold out any hope of ever making a great show in the domestic department, but it would be nice, the next time I entertain a […]

New President, New World

New President, New World

Well we have ourselves a new President, President Warren G Harding. The very first president elected partly by women – what a strange and exciting thought. Now that we women have voted in our first presidential election, I wonder how long it will be before we […]

Movie Crushes

Movie Crushes

There is a rumor going around the lot that none other than Jack McCann is due to sign a contract with us. I’m not putting too much stock in it so far (if there’s one thing we do well in the movie colony, it’s spread rumors…), […]

Get to know me!

All About Me

All About Me

Some facts about me:

  1. My name is Anna Lena Gustavsson, and I was born just outside Minneapolis on June 14, 1897.
  2. As you might guess from my name, I’m of Swedish stock. My father worked his way to the US from Stockholm as a ship boy in 1890, but my mother’s people were amongst the first Scandinavian immigrants to the new world in the 1600s.
  3. I came out to California just one year ago without even a letter of introduction, just a dream of working in a movie studio.
  4. For my first three months in Los Angeles, I lived at the YWCA, and there became fast chums with Ida, who had already secured employment at the Fox Film Corporation. It was she who put my name forward when word went round that Esme Holt was looking for a secretary.
  5. My favorite thing about my job is getting to learn all aspects of the picture business. Miss Holt is a big star, but she also produces pictures and is a founder of the Players Incorporated studio. As her assistant I get to be a part of all of it.
  6. My least favorite aspect of studio life is how I can have nothing to do for days and days while Miss Holt is away shooting on location, then suddenly I can’t leave my desk before 10pm for at least a week!
  7. This year I have started to learn the game of golf and I just love it.
  8. My cooking skills are just about non existent. If I arrive home too late or too early to share a meal with Ida, I eat at a diner in downtown Hollywood rather than risk suicide by undercooked meat. I’m real lucky to have found a roommate skilled in an area I’m so deficient – I try to make it up to her by keeping the place neat and tidy, but I’m no great shakes in that department either.
  9. In about six months I hope to go on as a script girl to one of the major scenario writers like Frances Marion or Anita Loos, then someday, if I prove to have the goods, become a scenario writer myself.
  10. I currently have two beaux who take me out to dinner or dancing, but neither is serious marriage material – just fun.
